Powered by restic
Every backup is created with restic, trusted open-source backup software. Your repositories are encrypted and deduplicated, and they remain standard restic repositories you can access directly. Your backups do not depend on our control panel staying around.

Open Source
The Backup Chief agent that runs on your servers is open source. Review exactly how backups are run, report issues, contribute improvements, or build it yourself. No black box between your server and your backup storage.

Your storage, your data
Connect S3-compatible storage from the provider you trust. Backups run on your server and are written to storage you control. We do not resell your backup storage or put a limit on how much data or how many recovery points you keep there.

Files, MySQL, and PostgreSQL
Back up directories, MySQL databases, and PostgreSQL databases from the same dashboard. Choose exactly which paths, databases, and tables belong in each backup job, and leave out what you do not need.

Flexible, reliable schedules
Run backups daily on the Free plan or as often as every five minutes on a paid plan. You can also start a backup whenever you need one. Schedules are kept on your server, so a temporary control-panel outage does not stop scheduled backups from running.

Retention that fits your recovery needs
Decide how many recent, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly recovery points to keep for every job. Important recovery point? Mark it as “keep forever” so the normal retention policy leaves it alone.

Restore your way
Browse recovery points and files from the dashboard, prepare a hosted download for convenience, restore directly on your server, or use restic yourself. Restores on your own servers and restores performed directly with restic are always unlimited.

Check backups before you need them
Regular restic repository checks help catch storage problems before restore day. Backup Chief schedules these checks and shows their results alongside your backup and maintenance history.
